How every pane is built

Any glass above goes into a double-pane unit, tempered wherever the code calls for safety glass, and chosen to pass California's Title 24. We pick the thickness for each pane's size and show every detail on your shop drawings.

Double-pane insulated glass set in a wood sash, in cross section: two panes, a Low-E coating, a sealed air space, and the spacer and seal at the edgeOutsideInsideLow-E coatingAir spaceSpacerSealWood sash

Double-pane

Two panes sealed around a spacer, with an air space between. It keeps heat out in summer and in during winter, and quiets the street.

What you get

  • Low-E coating on the outer pane
  • Dual seal around the edge
  • Aluminum or warm-edge spacer
  • Glass thickness sized to each pane
A truck seen through broken glass: on the left ordinary glass cracked into long sharp shards, on the right tempered glass broken into small piecesOrdinary: sharp shardsTempered: small pieces

Tempered

Safety glass, heat-treated so it breaks into small, blunt pieces. We check every pane against the code and mark the ones that need it.

Where California code calls for it

  • Doors, and glass within 24" of a door
  • Large panes low to the floor
  • Near tubs, showers and pools
  • Next to stairs and landings
A truck in strong sun seen through two kinds of glass: clear glass on the left lets the glare and heat wash the view out, Low-E glass on the right cuts them backClear: more sun heatLow-E: less sun heat

Title 24

California's energy code sets how much heat new windows may let through. We choose the coating and glass so yours pass plan check.

What plan check reads

  • U-factor: heat lost through the window
  • SHGC: how much sun heat comes in
  • Low-E chosen for each side of the house
  • Both listed on your shop drawings

Glass questions

For most homes, double-pane insulated glass with a triple-silver Low-E coating on sunny sides and double-silver on shaded sides. It keeps rooms cooler, protects floors and furniture from fading, and meets Title 24.

The building code requires safety glass in doors, beside doors, in large low windows and near tubs and showers. We mark every pane that needs it on your shop drawings.

Yes. We can bring samples of the patterns and tints to your consultation, so you can see them in your own light.
