Window
Sticking Profiles

The shaped edge around every pane: Shaker, Ogee, Ovolo or Beveled, matched to your home's style.

Our four sticking profiles

Sticking is the shaped edge milled along the sash where the wood meets the glass, and along each grid bar. It's a small detail you notice every time you look out, and one of the clearest signs of a window's period and style. Each drawing is the cross section from our shop drawings: the sash on the left, a grid bar on the right, with the glass between.

Shaker

Square edge

A square, unshaped edge. Clean and quiet, it lets the wood and the glass speak for themselves.

Best for

  • Craftsman
  • Mission
  • Shaker
  • Modern homes

Ogee

S-curve

A graceful S-shaped curve, the most traditional and decorative of the four. It catches light and shadow along every edge.

Best for

  • Colonial
  • Victorian
  • Spanish Revival
  • Other period homes

Ovolo

Quarter round

A rounded, convex edge with a small step at the face. Softer than an ogee and still clearly traditional.

Best for

  • Georgian
  • Colonial Revival
  • English cottage

Beveled

Chamfer

A straight, angled cut along the edge. Crisp and simple, with a little more depth than a square edge.

Best for

  • Craftsman
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Prairie
  • Transitional homes

Sticking questions

Sticking is the shaped profile milled along the inside edge of a wood window's sash, where the wood meets the glass. The same profile runs along the muntins, so every pane is framed by a matching edge. The name comes from the old woodworking term for a moulding cut into the solid piece.

Our standard profile is 1/2 inch wide, cut into the face of the sash and the muntins. We can change the size to match existing windows.

Yes. Send a close-up photo or a small offcut and we'll match it, which matters in historic districts where new windows must match the originals.
