Window Grid &
Grille Styles

Classic and arched grid patterns, built as simulated or true divided lites to match your home.

Grid patterns

Grids, also called grilles, muntins or divided lites, split the glass into smaller panes and set the character of a window more than almost any other detail. Patterns for square and arched windows; we draw your exact layout on the shop drawings before we build.

Colonial grid

An even grid of small panes, the classic look for Colonial, Georgian and traditional homes. Any number of rows and columns, set to your drawings.

Vertical divided

One or more vertical bars only, for tall, narrow lites. Clean and simple, at home on Craftsman, Mission and modern houses.

Single lite (no grid)

One clear pane and nothing in the way of the view. Best for picture windows and contemporary homes.

Radial arch

Bars that fan out from the center of an arched top, like spokes. Classic on arched windows and doors.

Sunburst

A small half-circle at the base of the arch with rays fanning out from it. Popular on Spanish Revival and Mediterranean homes.

Double sunburst

Two curved rings with rays between them, for a grand arched window or a door transom.

Simulated vs. true divided lites

How the bars are built changes the look up close, the insulation, and what a historic review board will accept.

Most popular

Simulated divided lites (SDL)

One insulated glass unit with wood bars bonded to both faces.

  • Best insulation
  • Lowest cost per pane
  • Looks divided inside and out
Historic

True divided lites (TDL)

Separate panes of glass held in a full-depth wood muntin, the traditional way.

  • Most authentic look
  • Built like original windows
  • Sometimes required by review boards

The bars carry the same sticking profile as the sash, so the edges match all around the glass. Our standard bar is 1 1/4" wide; we make them narrower or wider to suit the window's size or to match your existing windows.

Grid questions

Simulated divided lites (SDL) use one insulated glass unit with wood bars bonded to both faces and a spacer bar between the panes, so they look divided but insulate like a single unit. True divided lites (TDL) use separate panes held in a full-depth wood muntin, the way windows were built before insulated glass.

Many do, because SDL bars on both faces with a spacer bar between the panes look divided from any angle. Some boards require true divided lites. We match what your district asks for and show it on the shop drawings for review.

Yes. Send photos or measurements of an original window and we'll match the pattern, the bar width and the profile.
